1857, The Scientific American warns that whale oil, used for lighting, may soon run out due to overhunting

I’ll bet you there were a bunch of non-scientific commentators, paid by the whaling industry, running around saying things like “we have to explore other oceans” and “harpoon, baby, harpoon!”.
